Above is the song, in order to give some context to the album art (and so you can see my art in action).
Album Art:
The Violet Stones'
"Power Hungry"
Challenge
Australian band, The Violet Stones, needed cover art for their next 2020 single, “Power Hungry.” Having worked with them in the past, they decided to commission me once again to design their cover art. The goal, again, was to create a pleasing album art that also aided in illustrating the themes of the song- issues of gun violence within America and the “power hungry” individuals that abuse their power (i.e. guns).
Solution
The band members wanted to illustrate the theme of gun violence, a very serious topic, in as lighthearted way as possible, in order to be sensitive to such a heavy hearted subject. Band members led me in creative direction, deciding on certain aspects of the cover art, such as the subject matter and typography. Jared, the lead guitarist, had the idea that we approach the theme of gun violence by using children’s crayons to literally “illustrate” the song’s subject matter. The cartoonish art style also helped to ease the seriousness of the piece, while still communicating the song’s themes effectively.
Results
The cover art resulted in a bold, easily understood depiction of the lyrical themes, while still approached in a creative and original way. Through this project, I learned even more regarding collaboration, teamworking, digital illustration, as well as effective communication, particularly when handling serious topics such as violence.
